Moving Tips

The best way to avoid any disasters during your move is to plan, plan and then plan some more. A well planned move is likely to run smoothly, so get your sensible head on and use our checklist so you don't forget anything.

As soon as possible

A1 If you have children and will need to change their school, begin researching the available options as soon as you decide you want to move.

A1 Have a clear out, removing all that old stuff you've kept but don't really need any more.

A1 Arrange for a charity to collect any unwanted items you may wish to donate, and dispose of rubbish.

Before the move

A1 Cancel rental agreements, if applicable.

A1 If you require post to be redirected, contact the post office now to arrange.

A1 Buy change of address cards and make a local map to your new house for friends and family.

A1 Arrange for meters to be read on moving date.

A1 Arrange for disconnection and reconnection of built-in electrical appliances you are taking with you (eg. Dishwasher, washing machine)

A1 Inform gas and electricity suppliers of the date of your move

A1 Make arrangements for your phone, cable TV and email to be swapped to new numbers/addresses on the day of the move. Check if you will need additional sockets/connections in the new property.
Start running down your freezer contents.

A1 If you are handling some of your packing yourself, actually start packing items you know you will not use again until after the move.

A1 Get together all important personal documents (passports, birth certificates, insurance policies, etc.) Keep them in a file in a safe place. It's amazing how many people lose important documents in a move!

Finally

A1 Always carry out a thorough final check before you leave to make sure nothing has been left behind
